The U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday that it will allow universities to offer degree programs that do not require financial aid to complete.
The move will allow students to focus on learning and pursue careers while paying down their debt.
The policy will come into effect for all institutions by June 1.
The move comes as tuition costs at colleges and universities have increased sharply in recent years, according to a recent report from the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
The cost of attending college rose by 8.7% between 2011 and 2016.
